""There is no basis for proceeding with criminal charges in this case," wrote SIU director Joseph Martino in his decision. "The file is closed.""
"The family member explained that the man's mental health had been deteriorating and he was not taking his medication, and had expressed suicidal ideation in the past."
"Officers entered the home and discovered the man had barricaded himself in a basement bathroom. They told him to step out with his hands up, but got no response."
"Police found the man lying on his back in a shower with the water running and blood around him, indicating the severity of the situation."
The SIU cleared a Peel Regional Police officer of wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man who attacked a family member with a knife. The incident occurred on December 11, 2025, when the man, experiencing mental health issues, stabbed a family member before barricading himself in a bathroom. Police attempted to negotiate but ultimately forced entry, leading to the officer's use of lethal force. The SIU concluded there was no basis for criminal charges against the officer involved.
