Longfellow Middle School, already relocated for safety concerns, faces new risks from upcoming construction of Workforce Housing at its temporary campus on San Pablo Avenue. While this development aims to address Berkeley's housing needs, it threatens the safety of students commuting, especially those biking and walking. The entrance used by students has seen several collisions, prompting calls for immediate safety improvements. While the school community has successfully adapted to the relocation, the construction's impact on traffic flow raises alarm for the safety of both students and staff.
The bicycle and pedestrian entrance on Virginia Street used by students to access the new Longfellow site has already proven dangerous. Since the start of the school year, there have been three collisions requiring ambulances to be called, and numerous other collisions that have gone unreported.
New construction project in what is now the parking lot and drop-off area of the school fills a critical housing need that will help keep great teachers in Berkeley.
