A fire broke out in Fremont's Waterstone Apartments on Sunday morning, leading to a tragic incident where 54-year-old Charlotte Holguin fell to her death while trying to escape. Eyewitnesses report hearing cries for help for several minutes before responders arrived. Holguin and another man dangled from the balcony before both fell four stories at the arrival of fire crews. The fire remains under investigation, with several individuals injured, including one critically. The aftermath left the apartment building severely damaged and community members shaken by the event.
The screams woke me up, Sam Cruz, a neighbor, said Monday morning. They were crying for help for 10, 20 minutes before (first responders) arrived.
Cruz said he watched from the ground floor parking lot as flames appeared to burst through the fourth-floor apartment's living room and spread to the balcony.
Two other people were injured in the incident, authorities said, though it is unclear how they were hurt.
Holguin was pronounced dead at the scene. The other victim who fell was transported to a hospital and was in critical condition Sunday.
