"My dad tried to kill me, a dying 11-year-old girl told police and paramedics after getting stabbed while trying to protect her mother, a prosecutor told jurors on Thursday, at the beginning of the murder trial for the girl's stepfather."
"She literally gave her life trying to save her mother's life, Deputy District Attorney Devin Campbell said during opening statements to an Orange County Superior Court jury. She literally died because she tried and succeeded in saving her mom's life."
"A knife had gone three and a half inches into her body, prosecutors said, striking the left side of her abdomen. The mother's screams for help as she escaped their home in blood-splattered clothing drew an immediate response from neighbors in the normally quiet area."
Tanh Thien Tran, 81, faces murder charges for killing his stepdaughter Anh Yen Nguyen Duong and attempting to murder his wife San Nguyen on August 29, 2018. The 11-year-old girl was stabbed while protecting her mother during a violent attack at their Garden Grove residence. The girl's final words to paramedics indicated her stepfather tried to kill her. Her mother escaped the home screaming for help, alerting neighbors. Police rescued the injured girl and her two younger brothers from the home. Tran engaged in a standoff with police and attempted suicide before arrest. The prosecution argues the girl sacrificed her life saving her mother's. The defense has not disclosed its alternative theory of events.
