In Los Altos Hills, the Girouard family faces eviction from their home of decades, which they've maintained since 1972. Originally hired by the Duveneck family, their tenancy was solidified by an agreement for caretaking duties after the property was sold to Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District in 1987. While the adult children feel they too contributed to caretaking, Midpen only recognizes the parents in their tenancy agreements. After a tree-related incident left them temporarily displaced, the family was issued an eviction notice when they sought official recognition of their occupancy rights.
"I know Midpen only likes to cite my dad as the person who was responsible for caretaking but that wasn't true. My mom and I had taken over his responsibilities."
"When I was a kid this trail was only wide enough for people to walk shoulder-to-shoulder or a horse to go up which is the reason my dad rode horse patrol."
