On Friday, December 13, Evelin Acosta, a 19-year-old from Brentwood, experienced a rare stroke due to complications from lupus. Initially, she didn't recognize the signs, but her boyfriend did. After a five-week hospitalization that included brain and heart surgeries, Acosta's situation was dire but ultimately hopeful. Dr. Richard Jung described the severe blood clot as blocking circulation to her brain, requiring a complex procedure that initially seemed successful but led to complications. Miraculously, Acosta shows signs of recovery, although challenges remain ahead in her healing journey.
"I was on a call with my boyfriend, and he said, 'You're slurring your words,'" recalled Evelin Acosta, then 19, highlighting the onset of her stroke.
"It would be like if a tractor-trailer T-boned and completely blocked up all three lanes on the Southern State [Parkway]," quoted Dr. Richard Jung, explaining the impact of the blood clot.
"I would say this was an absolute miracle and a little bit - a lot - of fortune," Jung noted, emphasizing Acosta's unexpected recovery after her stroke.
"When I came to the hospital... I had to get a wheelchair because I couldn't even walk," she recounted, describing her condition upon arrival at the hospital.
