In November 1990, jogger Maria Weidhofer was found dead in Tilden Regional Park, California, with indications of a violent struggle. Over three decades later, police identified Jon Lipari as a suspect based on DNA evidence, who died by suicide in 2024. Despite the investigation's challenges, including an initial lack of suspects, advancements in DNA analysis and collaboration with the FBI allowed investigators to confirm Lipari's identity as the suspect. This recent development brings renewed hope for closure to Weidhofer's family and community.
We hope that today's development brings some measure of closure to Maria's family and the community that has lived with this tragedy for over three decades.
Through an autopsy, investigators determined Weidhofer died from asphyxia by ligature strangulation, with physical signs of a struggle evident on her body.
