Bay Area Japanese American families have seen a significant decline in culturally sensitive senior care facilities, with the number dropping from about ten to five in the past decade. The closure of J-Sei Home, which served its community for 30 years, has put a spotlight on this issue, as many residents were elderly Japanese Americans with special care needs. Executive director Diane Wong emphasized the financial challenges of maintaining the facility amidst rising costs and demographics shifting towards a more diverse and acculturated population, impacting traditional eldercare.
"J-Sei Home was a very special place. The caregivers treated each resident like family," said Matt Fukuchi, Fukuchi's son.
"For the past 13, 14 years, we could never break even," she said. "We weren't getting enough people into the facility, costs are rising..."
