Macayla Story, Johnnie García, and Nicolás Vallejo from Saint Monica Prep earned significant scholarships through their work as golf caddies. Story was awarded a $125,000 Chick Evans Scholarship, which covers her college housing and tuition for four years. The selection process for these scholarships emphasizes academic achievement, financial need, dedication, and character. After traveling and working hard at various golf clubs, each student successfully navigated interviews amidst stiff competition. For Story, this scholarship eases family financial concerns and is a remarkable academic opportunity, marking a turning point in her life as she adjusted to the world of golf.
Story traveled to Chicago to work as a caddie for two months at Skokie Country Club, and Garcia and Vallejo did the program locally with Los Angeles Country Club.
"I was very shy; I didn't know if I was going to make friends or what I was supposed to do as a caddie," she recalls.
The scholarships are awarded to student caddies who demonstrate academic excellence, financial need, dedication on the golf course and exemplary character.
The scholarship represents not only an academic opportunity, but also a huge relief for her family.
