A groundbreaking California law, taking effect January 1, 2025, mandates that all baby food products sold in the state undergo monthly testing for heavy metals: lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury. This comes five years after alarming findings on heavy metal contamination in a congressional report. The law requires that each product has a QR code on its label, enabling parents nationwide to access current testing results, fostering transparency and safety in baby food consumption.
As of January 1, 2025, every company that sells baby food products in California is required to test for four heavy metals every month.
This law comes five years after a congressional report warned about dangerously high levels of lead and other metals in baby food.
Parents and caregivers across the country will be able to check baby food safety via QR codes that link to heavy metal test results.
My research highlights how prevalent these toxic agents are in everyday products such as baby food.
