Despite Newsom's objections, Democrats approve striking penalty for soliciting older teens from bill
Briefly

California lawmakers have controversially amended a bill, AB 379, removing tougher penalties for soliciting sex from 16- and 17-year-olds, despite opposition from Governor Newsom. Heated debates ensued in the Assembly, with Republicans accusing Democrats of being soft on sex offenders. Although Democrats promised further work on the issue, this marks the second consecutive year they refused to impose felony charges for soliciting older teens. The legislation's intent shifted, aiming to strengthen protections without altering prosecution methods.
"It's crazy. Why? Somebody on this floor, give me an example. Give me one good reason why we should treat [16- and 17-year-olds] differently. You can't," Republican minority leader James Gallagher (R-Yuba City) said Thursday.
"I think it's important for us to continue to work on this issue, despite the political noise. We owe it to our young people to ensure their safety," said Assemblymember Maggy Krell.
