Bishop Fintan Gavin's recent directive forbids sacramental celebrations like First Communions and First Reconciliations during school hours, mandating they be held on weekends to enhance family involvement. This decision has upset teachers, who may need to sacrifice their weekends to facilitate these church events. The Bishop emphasizes the role of family in these sacraments, insisting they occur in a church setting, departing from practices where schools handled them during regular hours. Schools have expressed their displeasure, with some writing back to protest the changes.
I wish to highlight the importance of the intentional involvement of parents and families, and I ask that you communicate this to the schools also.
The sacrament is not to be celebrated outside of the church in the school building nor during school time.
