Colin Farrell, nominated for an Oscar for "The Banshees of Inisherin," recently shared his personal struggles with his son James's diagnosis of Angelman syndrome. His lack of resources once James turned 21 has prompted a decision to explore residential care options, a choice he finds difficult yet necessary. Farrell expressed worries about the uncertainties of the future and the critical need for his son to have a supportive living environment. He aims to ensure that James can lead a fulfilling life surrounded by care and community despite the challenges they face.
It's tricky - some parents will say, 'I want to take care of my child myself', and I respect that. But my horror would be, what if I have a heart attack tomorrow, and, God forbid, James's mother, Kim, has a car crash and she's taken too - and then James is on his own?
We want him to find somewhere where he can have a full and happy life, where he feels connected.
Once your child turns 21, they're kind of on their own. All the safeguards that are put in place - special ed classes - that all goes away.
