A recent rockslide on state Route 140 has forced Caltrans to indefinitely close a crucial entry point to Yosemite National Park. This situation has significantly affected surrounding communities, particularly during the spring tourism season. Businesses such as the Mariposa Visitor Center are struggling with decreased foot traffic. Locals face increased travel time due to detours, extending commutes for workers and families, while some students are opting for online classes as a result of road closures. Overall, the rockslide has caused significant inconvenience and economic concern for the area.
We're definitely noticing it in the community and especially at the visitor center, where you're not really getting the business coming through that we would like to, especially for this time of year. The waterfalls are flowing amazing, and the mountainsides are just beautiful right now, so this is a really good time to come to Mariposa, but also, to go to Yosemite.
There's people that live in the park or have government jobs and their spouse may work down here in Mariposa. They have to drive around to get to work now. It's like a four- to five-hour drive round trip to get to work now.
Many of the El Portal and Yosemite Valley kids 'trapped on the other side of the road closure' are opting to take classes online while the road is closed.
