The recent deadly attack during a Filipino festival in Vancouver has left a profound impact on Filipino American communities in the Bay Area. In the wake of this tragedy, local leaders are actively promoting cultural celebrations and enhancing safety for attendees. The SOMA Pilipinas Cultural Heritage District is expanding initiatives like know-your-rights workshops and increasing security at events. Upcoming festivals, like the Harajuku Lumpia Fest, will not only celebrate Filipino culture but also provide support to the victims of the attack, highlighting the community's resilience amidst these challenges.
"A lot of our immigrant community feel a lot of anxiety and insecurity, and this is just another piece of news that really hit home," said Raquel Redondiez, director of SOMA Pilipinas.
"This is really the time we need to show each other love," says Samantha Larot, founder of Harajuku Marketplace and event organizer.
