Authorities identified two of the three fatalities in recent crashes in rural Contra Costa County. Gabriel Biadgi, 34, died in a head-on collision on Highway 4, while Amber Smith, 26, perished in a separate incident on Kirker Pass Road. The crash on Highway 4 involved a fiery wreck with a lithium battery hazard, causing a hazardous materials response. Smith's accident involved a Ford and a Toyota, resulting in serious injuries to a passenger. Both incidents raise concerns about road safety in rural regions, particularly given their severity.
Fire officials said fire crews were forced to let it burn itself out because the lithium battery from the SUV was sending hydrogen fluoride into the air.
Smith tried to turn left from westbound Hess Road onto Kirker Pass Road and pulled in front of a Toyota Sienna that hit her.
