High school students face increasing challenges accessing bathrooms as schools implement stricter policies to curb vaping and drug use. At Del Mar High School in San Jose, only three bathrooms are available during class, leading to long lines and frustrations for students. The enforced five-minute limit to use restrooms adds to their difficulties, especially when facilities are in poor condition, with reports of broken stalls and litter. Similar restrictions at Willow Glen High reinforce a nationwide trend of students struggling to meet basic needs during school hours due to inadequate facilities and policies aimed at safety.
‘The condition of the facilities doesn’t help, with broken locks on the stalls, bent doors and vaping devices lying in the urinals. It’s just horrible in general,’ a senior from Del Mar High School expressed.
‘When nature calls, it’s very inconvenient because you have to walk all the way across the school to get to a bathroom and we have a limit of one person at a time,’ a junior from Willow Glen High School stated.
Administrators are making it challenging for students to use restrooms by creating policies aimed at reducing vaping and drug use, leading to crowding and dissatisfaction among students.
