Michael Tilson Thomas, the beloved music director of the San Francisco Symphony, died at 81. He had previously undergone surgery for a brain tumor in 2021, but the tumor returned in early 2025, leading to a diagnosis of aggressive brain cancer. Tilson Thomas made his debut with the Symphony in 1974 and served as Music Director for 25 years. He conducted over 1,800 concerts and remained influential in the organization even after stepping down. The Symphony will dedicate upcoming performances of 'Beethoven's Ninth Symphony' to his memory.
