The San Francisco Ballet's presentation featuring 'Chroma' brings a contemporary twist to ballet, merging the stark aesthetics of modern dance with the energetic beats of The White Stripes. Instead of a conventional narrative, it embraces the sheer joy of movement, allowing performers to express themselves beyond traditional storytelling. The performance, part of a series titled 'Cool Britannia', highlights the physical limits of ballet while celebrating queerness and the relatability of dance, as seen through the chemistry of the performers and their infectious energy on stage.
C hroma is what I assume happens in a ballet dancer's apartment when they wake up: A White Stripes song comes on. Everyone is in matching nude cami sleepwear, and without a word between them, the dancing begins.
But what caught me most was the joy. The moment Nikisha Fogo broke into a smile, I found myself dancing too. Likewise, a pas de trois with Victor Prigent, Archie Sullivan, and Esteban Hernández felt, and I'll just say it: really gay to me, in the best way.
