Washington mother, 78, dies after eating mislabeled cookie - as family takes action against grocery store
Briefly

A 78-year-old woman tragically died after mistakenly consuming a peanut butter cookie, mislabelled as an oatmeal raisin cookie, which she was allergic to. After realizing the mix-up, she suffered a fatal allergic reaction within an hour of eating the cookie. Her family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Safeway, the grocery store where the cookies were bought. Following her death, the parent company of Safeway voluntarily recalled the affected cookies after an FDA report highlighted the mislabeling and the undeclared allergens involved.
"My mom loved Oatmeal raisin cookies," Bishop said. "She realized that the cookie she was eating was actually a peanut butter cookie and she's deathly allergic to peanuts."
The King County Coroner ruled she died from anaphylaxis - a life-threatening allergic reaction - and that her "blood vessels had basically broken down."
Nearly one month after Bryant died, Albertsons Companies, Inc., which owns Safeway, issued a voluntary recall of the oatmeal raisin cookies sold at Safeway's Duvall location due to an "undeclared peanut and soy allergen."
The recalled cookies were packaged in clear plastic containers available within the store's bakery department.
