A recent investigation reveals that many gluten-free products, particularly those made from cassava, contain alarming levels of toxic heavy metals, specifically lead. Testing conducted by Consumer Reports on various cassava-based snacks found that a significant portion exceeded the recommended safety limits for lead, raising concerns about the health implications of prolonged exposure. Experts suggest that cassava may absorb lead from contaminated sources, raising further alarms about gluten-free diets often viewed as healthier. The findings stress the importance of consumer awareness regarding food safety and potential health risks associated with these products.
Some of these cassava products had the highest level of lead that we've ever tested, and I've been with Consumer Reports for eight and a half years.
We never want consumers to panic, but we do want them to be aware so they can take proper measures to reduce their lead intake.
