SF restaurant returns after catastrophic flooding kept it shut for 2 years
"There's a buzz at the corner of San Francisco's Clay and Fillmore streets where diners seated at outdoor tables sip on cocktails under the bright neon sign perched outside Palmer's Tavern. Following a devastating interior flood that kept Palmer's Tavern closed for two years, locals were back in droves this week, angling for a seat inside the dimly lit restaurant."
""If you walked in today, you wouldn't have known that we closed," owner Sam Fechheimer told SFGATE. "We wanted to re-create as close to the original look as possible by making necessary upgrades. If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Last week, Palmer's Tavern held a soft opening ahead of its grand opening this week, unveiling its new space along with a revamped menu created by executive chef Matt Woods, who previously worked at Scopo Divino."
Palmer's Tavern on the corner of Clay and Fillmore in San Francisco reopened after a two-year closure caused by a catastrophic interior flood from a leaking water heater above in September 2023. The restaurant underwent a massive restoration to return the space to its original look while making necessary upgrades, preserving classic red leather seating, vintage photographs, and three big-game mounts. A soft opening prefaced the grand reopening, and executive chef Matt Woods introduced a revamped menu with bar bites, mains such as New York strip and an 8-ounce burger, and cocktails including an espresso martini and a spicy Sayulita. The reopening drew many returning patrons.
