The San Francisco Opera revealed its exciting 2025-26 season, highlighted by the premiere of The Monkey King, an opera that adapts the classic Chinese tale Journey to the West. This dynamic work, featuring dance and puppetry, will premiere on November 14, showcasing the titular character's epic journey. Additionally, the renowned opera Dead Man Walking returns, alongside Richard Wagner's Parsifal. The season features a mix of classic and contemporary works, including Rossini's The Barber of Seville and Strauss' Elektra, with attention to diversity and societal themes.
The new work, which runs through Nov. 30, promises to push SF Opera to new technical heights, utilizing dance and puppetry to tell the story of the ruler of the monkey kingdom.
The opera is part of SF Opera Music Director Eun Sun Kim's ongoing exploration of the 20th century German composer's work, and will be directed by Matthew Ozawa.
