Poor House Bistro, a New Orleans-style restaurant in San Jose, celebrates its 20th anniversary with a parade and live music event. Owner Jay Meduri emphasizes the resilience of the restaurant, which faced significant challenges over the years. The eatery, known for its authentic New Orleans dishes, moved locations in January 2022 due to challenges stemming from Google purchasing its original lot and the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced a shift to family-style meals. The restaurant is now located at 317 W. St. John St. in the Little Italy district.
Owner Jay Meduri reflects on the journey, stating, "It seems like it went by quick, but we hit a lot of bumps in the road. To me, the proudest thing, is that we stayed open. They never knocked us down."
Poor House Bistro, originally opened in 2005 in Meduri's grandparents' house, is known for its authenticity in New Orleans cuisine with dishes like beignets, barbecue shrimp plates, and muffaletta sandwiches.
The Poor House Bistro business faced significant challenges beginning in 2018 when Google purchased the lot, followed by the COVID-19 pandemic that forced a pivot to family-style meals.
In January 2022, the Poor House was moved to a new location and rebranded to Famiglia Meduri's Poor House Bistro, embodying its transition to the Little Italy neighborhood.
