A section of the roof at Cost Less Food Company in Oakdale, Northern California, collapsed, injuring two shoppers. Luckily, only minor injuries were reported, with one person hospitalized. The Modesto Fire Department responded promptly, and a rescue team ensured no other individuals were trapped inside. The aftermath left drywall and produce scattered, and significant flooding occurred due to damage to the store's fire sprinkler system. While a sign directed customers to a nearby store, the cause of the incident remains unknown, with further communication from the grocery store pending.
At first we thought it was thunder, but it was a lot louder. As soon as we got over there, the store director opened the emergency door to get people out.
Jim Black, the public information officer for the Modesto Fire Department, confirmed that the roof fell on top of two shoppers who were shopping in the produce section at the time.
The aftermath showed portions of drywall and fresh produce scattered throughout the floor, with a section of the roof seen folded into a well-stocked shelf.
The cause of the roof collapse is not known at this time, as SFGATE reached out to Cost Less Food Company but did not hear back.
