U.S. agriculture officials issued a health alert regarding ground beef from Whole Foods that may contain E. coli bacteria. This includes 1-pound packages of Organic Rancher beef processed by NPC Processing Inc. Those products, with use-by dates of June 19 and 20, were produced in May and distributed to various states. Although there have been no reported illnesses, consumers should dispose of or return any affected meat. The alert highlights the serious health risks associated with E. coli infections, especially for vulnerable populations like children and older adults.
E. coli bacteria can cause infections with symptoms that include dehydration, diarrhea and cramps. Most people recover within a week, but some can become severely ill.
The problem was discovered when company officials notified FSIS that they had shipped beef products that tested positive for E. coli O157:H7, a type of bacteria that can cause serious illness.
