The Campaign Against Hunger, serving thousands of families weekly, struggles amid rising food costs and funding cuts that threaten its operation. Despite a resilient labor market, food insecurity has surged with one million more households affected in 2023 compared to 2022. This situation is aggravated by cuts in federal grants, with the USDA halting significant food deliveries and programs supporting local producers. Executives from the nonprofit warn that ongoing reductions could jeopardize their ability to provide essential food services, effectively pushing working-class individuals to seek assistance.
"We were already in a bad state. But now we have been plunged head-down into a crisis that should never have been," said Melony Samuels, executive director of The Campaign Against Hunger.
"If major cuts like these continue, I would imagine that our doors will close," emphasized Samuels, highlighting the dire situation faced by food banks in light of funding cuts.
