A comprehensive report from the 2022 US Trans Survey highlights that transphobia significantly influences detransition experiences among trans Americans. Conducted by Advocates for Trans Equality, the survey included over 84,000 participants, revealing that 98% of those who underwent social or medical transition reported increased happiness and life satisfaction. The findings indicate that many respondents benefit notably from gender-affirming hormone therapy and surgery, with higher levels of happiness correlating with both social and medical transition. These results emphasize the importance of affirming environments for trans and non-binary individuals.
"Social and medical transition were profound sources of life satisfaction among USTS respondents," the researchers state in the report.
"Further, respondents who reported social or medical transition consistently reported higher happiness, thriving, and satisfaction."
"Nearly all respondents who were on GAHT (98 per cent) or had received surgery (97 per cent) were more satisfied with their lives after GAHT or surgery."
"Our results show that over half of respondents (59 per cent) had accessed some form of medical transition; 56 per cent had received gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT)."
