The LGBTQ+ exhibit created by historian Donna Graves at the Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historic Park was temporarily taken down due to fears of violating executive orders from President Trump that restricted diversity initiatives and the use of ‘transgender’ in federal discourse. Graves, who founded the park 25 years ago, expressed outrage upon learning about the removal. After advocacy, the exhibit was restored within days, highlighting the significance of queer history in the context of WWII, which is celebrated within the park.
It was, as far as we know, the first permanent exhibit on LGBTQ history at a national park.
Fearing the visitor center would be seen as in violation of these orders, a Rosie the Riveter staffer quietly took down the LGBTQ+ exhibit.
