The event highlighted the deeper connections formed among survivors after their traumatic experience. As a journalist, the author reflected on the importance of empathy and human connection in storytelling, asserting that true journalism goes beyond mere observation to engage with the lives of those being reported on. The author emphasized the ethical responsibility of queer journalists to authentically depict LGBTQ+ experiences.
I wrote in my oft-forgotten notes app: "An observer reaching for the impossible idea of objectivity will never be privy to this. So, they lack the story. It's listening and talking and being."
In queer journalism, we have an ethical duty to report and write factually about LGBTQ+ lives and experiences. Us in queer media... are authentic in our journalism.
