Elizabeth Lewis, an 18-year-old recent graduate from Mohonasen High School, is running against school board Vice President Chad McFarland in a May election. McFarland faced backlash when he made inappropriate comments during a debate about a Gender and Sexualities Alliance (GSA) club, equating it to controversial organizations. Despite complaints from Lewis's family regarding his remarks contributing to her anxiety, McFarland refused to apologize. The case escalated to the New York Education Department, prompting scrutiny of his comments, which were deemed unnecessarily inflammatory and inappropriate for educational discussions.
