Sir Ian McKellen is set to host a special reading of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night with an all transgender and nonbinary cast, presented by the new theater company Trans What You Will. The performance scheduled for July 25 at the Space Theatre in London will be livestreamed, aiming to explore the play's themes of gender and sexuality. McKellen expressed enthusiasm for the impact this production will have, while director Phoebe Kemp pointed out that the play's exploration of gender makes it especially relevant to the cast's experiences. Proceeds will support a charity for trans and gender-diverse individuals.
"Twelfth Night is perhaps the funniest and most moving of Shakespeare's plays. This is achieved through the complexity of gender and sexuality from first to last."
"It feels like Shakespeare wrote it for us," said director Phoebe Kemp, highlighting the play's themes of gender and performance.
