Booksmith, a bookstore in San Francisco, has decided to pull 'Harry Potter' books off its shelves to protest J.K. Rowling's political views, which many consider transphobic. The turning point for the bookstore was Rowling's launch of the J.K. Rowling Women's Fund, aimed at supporting individuals opposed to what she describes as unreasonable inclusion policies. Despite acknowledging the series' impact on their staff's upbringing, Booksmith, as a group of queer booklovers, wishes to avoid financially supporting Rowling's initiatives and has suggested alternative fantasy novels.
Booksmith stated that as a group of queer booklovers, they did not want to contribute economically to Rowling's new organization, which they disagree with morally.
In a recent Instagram post, Booksmith explained that even though the 'Harry Potter' series shaped many of their staff's childhoods, certain recent actions by Rowling prompted their decision.
