Pope Leo XIV's Tipperary connection revealed in 20-year-old photo
Briefly

On June 29, 2005, the Augustinian community, led by then-General Fr. Robert Prevost (now Pope Leo XIV), celebrated a special chapter mass at Fethard Abbey, marking 700 years of the church's existence. Photographer Joe Kenny captured the event, reminiscing about a large gathering that included significant figures like the current Pope. Joe highlighted the historical significance of the Augustinians in Fethard, mentioning their presence during the Confederation of Kilkenny in the 17th century. The mass also welcomed newly appointed officials, signifying ongoing connections to the church's rich history.
"It was a huge event for the Augustinians. They were celebrating over 700 years in Fethard and they had a big chapter mass in Limerick, and they all came over to Fethard then."
"At the time of the Confederation of Kilkenny, when Catholics were given a brief 'breathing space' from persecution, the Augustinians were able to hold their provincial chapters in Fethard in 1643, 1646 and 1649."
