GLAAD’s annual Social Media Safety Index exposes the failure of platforms like TikTok, Instagram and X to protect LGBTQ+ users from hate and harassment. The report highlights dangerous policy rollbacks from Meta and YouTube that enable derogatory language against LGBTQ individuals, exacerbating their vulnerability in real-world contexts. Despite scoring across various parameters of safety and expression, platforms like X scored the lowest since Elon Musk took over, reflecting a broader trend of undermined safety protocols amidst rising hate speech. GLAAD emphasizes the need for these companies to prioritize user safety over profits.
"At a time when real-world violence and harassment against LGBTQ people is on the rise, social media companies are profiting from the flames of anti-LGBTQ hate instead of ensuring the basic safety of LGBTQ users," said Sarah Kate Ellis, GLAAD's president and CEO.
GLAAD's report indicates that recent 'unprecedented hate speech policy rollbacks' from platforms like Meta and YouTube are actively undermining the safety of LGBTQ people both online and offline.
