California Gov. Gavin Newsom is under fire from LGBTQ advocates after he publicly endorsed banning transgender women from competing in women's sports during his podcast. His remarks were made in conversation with Charlie Kirk, a known figure with a history of making anti-trans statements. Critics argue that such views ignore scientific research, which indicates that trans athletes do not have an athletic advantage over cisgender counterparts. Advocates state that this alignment with conservative perspectives has alienated parts of his support base that prioritize LGBTQ rights.
"By ignoring science...he has alienated his base that deeply care about LGBTQ rights," said researcher Allison Chapman.
"I think it's an issue of fairness, I completely agree with you on that. It is an issue of fairness - it's deeply unfair," Newsom said.
"Research shows that trans people perform similarly to their cisgender counterparts, and available information does NOT indicate that trans athletes have inert athletic advantage. To put it plainly: the myth that trans women dominate sports is a fabricated lie rooted in misogyny, not science," Gender/Justice says.
"I revere sports, so the issue of fairness is completely legit," Newsom continued. "And I saw that - the last couple years, boy did I [see] how you guys were able to weaponize that issue at another level."
