Marloes collaborated with set designer Pierre Vaillant on a creative project centered around phallic imagery, emphasizing inclusivity and innovation in modern gay semiotics. The duo created three distinct shoots, featuring sculptures that paired sex toys with ordinary objects like socks and candles. Marloes sought to find a balance between aesthetic beauty and the purpose of sex toys, blending them seamlessly into the compositions. The experience allowed her to express her queer identity and showcase her work in a prominent platform, Gay Times, making it a pinnacle of her artistic journey.
The photographer then brought on the set designer Pierre Vaillant to collaborate on the project. Together, they were looking for ways that could "redefine a recognised queer language" while still "exploring modern gay semiotics".
One of the most important things for us was to make it all inclusive and to avoid obvious metaphors or stereotypes, that we have seen enough to refer to d*cks!
For Marloes, the project was the "perfect" brief. It allowed her full creative freedom, allowing her to bring in both her skills in art direction and photography.
It felt special seeing the work out in the world, that world being Gay Times, and to be able to represent my queer community - which is a big part of my life.
