Students at Texas A&M University filed a lawsuit against their school to block a newly implemented policy banning drag performances across the 11 campuses. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression and LGBTQ+ student organizations argue that the ban infringes upon First Amendment rights. The Texas A&M Board of Regents passed the ban, labeling drag shows as offensive and demeaning to women. Critics, including FIRE, contend that public universities cannot restrict expression based on perceived offensiveness, emphasizing the broader implications for various forms of dissent on campus.
"Public universities can't shut down student expression simply because the administration doesn't like the 'ideology' or finds the expression 'demeaning,'" said FIRE attorney Adam Steinbaugh.
"Drag shows can be seen as culture, art, and a form of expression, and banning them could have severe implications for students' rights," claimed a student activist.
