'Excitement' as refit of drag pub where Lily Savage was born is finally underway
Briefly

The Black Cap in Camden High Street is undergoing a £2 million refurbishment to reopen as an LGBT performance venue and B&B, following years of community activism against its redevelopment. Since its closure in 2015, campaigners have held weekly vigils, successfully listing it as an Asset of Community Value to retain its community identity. Despite challenges including structural issues and squatters, builders are now back on site, with hopes to reopen it before Christmas 2024, highlighting its importance as a historic safe space for the LGBT community.
“This battle has been going for more than ten years. We're really excited that the fit out finally started on Monday and it should be open before Christmas.”
“The pub closed on April 12, 2015 and since then, so many LGBT venues have closed down, we have lost so many safe places which were open to our community of gay men as far back as when homosexuality was illegal.”
