Big Freedia Is Ready to Take San Francisco to Church | KQED
Briefly

Freedia will perform at the Outside Lands festival, collaborating with the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus to deliver an uplifting performance for diverse audiences, particularly marginalized queer individuals. Music serves as a powerful vehicle for social messaging and healing for Freedia, especially following personal losses. In addition to her gospel set, she will also DJ at an open-air queer club and host her official release party for "Pressing Onward." The artistic director of the chorus underscores the importance of Freedia's inclusive message, which resonates beyond traditional religious contexts.
"Music is messaging, and music is what feeds the soul. And I'm definitely using my platform to be able to speak on trans rights, and just all of the rights of people in the LGBTQ+ community."
"When I'm on stage, I'm able to forget all the troubles of the world and lay down all of my burden," Freedia says.
"[Fans] have been rockin' with me for a long time in the Bay Area, and I think it's going to be even better this year," she says.
While SFGMC doesn't often sing religious music, Stensberg says, Big Freedia's inclusive message transcends boundaries.
