Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that NATO's collective self-defense agreement, specifically Article 5, should not automatically apply to Ukraine's territory currently occupied by Russia.
In his press conference, Zelenskyy stated, "Ukraine would never accept an accession plan that says otherwise" regarding NATO's recognition of all of Ukrainian territory in any future membership discussions.
He warned that NATO inviting Ukraine without the self-defense pact applying to occupied territories could lead to a split in how the alliance perceives regions of the country.
Zelenskyy reiterated that NATO's commitment from 2008 to eventually extend an invitation to Ukraine remains unfulfilled, despite ongoing efforts and pressures from Ukraine to expedite the process.
