General Kirillov, 54, died along with an aide after an explosive device planted in a scooter was detonated on Tuesday morning near the entryway to a residential building, confirming what Ukraine's S.B.U. reported regarding the assassination.
A day before his killing, Ukraine had accused General Kirillov of criminal activity, claiming he was responsible for over 4,800 uses of banned chemical weapons in Ukraine since the war's onset.
Ukraine's security service detailed that the chemical weapons used by Russian forces often included combat grenades equipped with irritant agents CS and CN, banned under the Chemical Weapons Convention.
The U.S. State Department confirmed that Russia has used chloropicrin, a choking agent from World War I, as well as tear gas on the battlefield, further supporting Ukraine's claims.
