In the ongoing conflict in Donbas, Ukraine is witnessing a surge of volunteers, including many over 40, who are responding to the urgent call for soldiers. With the invasion entering its fourth year, the government has established enlistment centers that facilitate on-demand sign-ups. Many of these volunteers undergo intensive, though brief, training, often having held a weapon for only a short time. One of the volunteers, Natalia, emphasizes their commitment by stating that protecting their country remains their sole focus.
"Protecting our country is the only thing we can do," says Natalia, 50, a mother of three from Sumy, highlighting the resolve of older volunteers amid ongoing conflict.
As Ukraine seeks thousands of new soldiers to bolster its defenses against Russia, enlistment centers provide instant sign-ups and new contracts for young recruits.
