He proposed building up Ukraine’s defense capabilities and preparing for coalition deployment in case a peace deal is reached. Starmer's comments came after a meeting with world leaders and Ukraine's President Zelenskyy, following a tentative ceasefire agreement involving Russia. However, concerns remain about Russia's commitment to peace and the implications of U.S. foreign policy shifts under President Trump.
We will build up Ukraine's own defences and armed forces and be ready to deploy as a coalition of the willing in the event of a peace deal to help secure Ukraine on the land, at sea and in the sky, Starmer said.
The meeting was held after Putin agreed in principle to an immediate 30-day ceasefire put forward by Washington and already accepted by Ukraine.
