The Security Service of Ukraine, or SBU, stated it has neutralized a Russian spy ring collecting sensitive information about military targets, including its F-16s. Russia's Main Intelligence Directorate, or GRU, was responsible for deploying this group across five regions in Ukraine. The operatives were working to identify the locations of military airfields where F-16 jets may be stationed along with the positions of air-defense systems.
It is believed that the group's members were working closely with deserters from Ukraine's military, who had aligned with Russian interests while attempting to evade punishment. This led to a recruitment process leveraging existing soldier contacts in frontline areas to gather vital intelligence on military operations and deployments. The duplicity of a recruit who misled fellow soldiers by posing as an intelligence operative emphasizes the level of infiltration into Ukraine's defenses.
