The World Food Program has had to suspend its aid distribution in the Zazam refugee camp, North Darfur due to escalating violence between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). With starvation looming for thousands of families, past efforts to supply the camp have been severely hampered by fighting and worsening conditions. The camp houses around half a million people and has faced famine since last August, amplifying the urgency of the aid situation amidst ongoing conflict and poor access for humanitarian convoys due to various obstructions.
"Without immediate assistance, thousands of desperate families in Zamzam could starve in the coming weeks," said Laurent Bukera, the regional director for the World Food Program (WFP).
"Terrified civilians, including humanitarian workers, were unable to leave the area when the fighting was most intense," she said.
Famine was declared in the Zamzam camp last August and spread to two other displacement camps.
...the agency blamed road conditions during the rainy season, fighting and "purposeful obstruction" by the RSF.
