Sudan: Army claims control of Khartoum DW 03/28/2025
Briefly

The Sudanese army has asserted complete control over Khartoum, having recently recaptured the presidential palace from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Army spokesperson Nabil Abdullah announced the elimination of the last remnants of the RSF in the capital. Despite this claim, the two-year civil war persists, with the RSF maintaining control over significant regions, particularly in Darfur. The humanitarian crisis has escalated, with millions displaced and high death tolls. The US plans to enhance diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the ongoing conflict, which has resulted in severe humanitarian challenges.
"Our forces today have successfully and forcibly cleansed the last pockets of the remnants of the Daglo terrorist militia in Khartoum locality," Abdullah said in a statement.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Thursday that Washington aims to step up diplomatic efforts to end the war in Sudan after the recent surge in violence.
The UN has called the situation in Sudan the 'world's worst humanitarian crisis' with fighting, widespread famine and disease forcing some 12.5 million of Sudan's 46 million citizens to flee.
Though government forces have made advances in Khartoum and central Sudan, RSF fighters still control large swaths of land across the country.
