Igor Kirillov, a senior general in charge of Russia's nuclear defence forces, was killed on Tuesday in a bomb blast in Moscow, highlighting escalating tensions.
The explosive device used in the attack had a capacity of some 300 grams in TNT equivalent, indicating the sophistication and intent behind this assassination.
Kirillov, who was married with two sons and served as chief of the Troops of Radiological, Chemical and Biological Defence since April 2017, was under international sanctions.
The attack, which occurred outside an apartment building southeast of the Kremlin, suggests a new wave of targeted violence amidst the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
