Moscow has rejected the latest US peace proposals aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, citing significant unmet demands. Russian Foreign Policy Adviser Sergei Ryabkov noted that while some American suggestions were acknowledged, they were unacceptable in their current form. Key demands from Russia, such as recognizing its annexation of Crimea and the need for Ukraine to pledge against NATO membership, were not adequately addressed. The Kremlin insists on resolving the root causes of the conflict, which it claims require dismantling Ukraine's independence, with Putin pushing for major changes in Kyiv's leadership.
We take the models and solutions proposed by the Americans very seriously, but we can't accept it all in its current form, Ryabkov was quoted by state media as telling the Russian magazine International Affairs.
As far as we can see, there is no place in them today for our main demand, namely to solve the problems related to the root causes of this conflict.
Moscow's terms would, in effect, dismantle Ukraine as an independent, functioning state pulling it firmly into Russia's sphere of influence.
Putin has repeatedly referred to what he claimed were the root causes of the conflict to justify his hardline position on any prospective deal to end the war in Ukraine.
