The attacks came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was in Brussels, where Kyiv's European allies are seriously considering the idea of deploying troops to Ukraine in the event of a deal with Russia to stop the war.
Kyiv's city military administration posted the casualty figures on Telegram as well as photos of the damage, showing debris-strewn streets, buildings with blown-out windows, burned-out cars and a large fire in the center of one of the city's main thoroughfares.
Russia's Defense Ministry said Friday on Telegram that the bombardment was in response to a Ukrainian attack earlier this week on the Kamensky chemical plant in Russia's southern Rostov region.
Heating had been cut off in one district of the capital, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram, affecting hundreds of residential buildings in addition to medical institutions and schools.
